Funded by the US Department of Energy, we are leading a project to evaluate a smart grid technology based on a new prices-from-devices transactive energy architecture, called TESS, which provides significant advantages in coordinating the operation of distributed energy resources (DER) — such as heat-pumps, battery storage units, electric vehicles, and solar panels. TESS has the potential to significantly increase the electric grid’s flexibility, providing a pathway to lower energy costs, accelerate decarbonization and beneficial electrification, reduce CO2 and other pollutant emissions, and increase the grid’s resilience and reliability.
